PERSONAL NOTE: We are close to having all conference information ready to post for the 2010 SUMMIT. As all of you know NoBA is a volunteer organization and I have not had much available time to build the SUMMIT pages and registration pages. It takes a dozen or more hours and that has just not been available to me. I have my second Annual Meeting this Friday night and 13 days of travel starting next week. After that, if not before, I will get everything in place for you to register. Please block out the days and plan to attend. Again, my apologies.

A View from Our Executive Director

Spiritual revitalization, full missional partnership, diversification, and a challenging future were the recurring ideas shared at this convocation among the over 400 Directors of Missions who attended. Last week’s Convocation on Associational missions held in Ridgecrest Conference Center in North Carolina was by most accounts a very successful and encouraging meeting. It was encouraging to have the North American Mission Board show its concern and support for Associational work in a renewed and significant way. It was successful because over half of the active Directors of Missions from all over North America were sharing their ideas, concerns, and dreams for the future. (Read full article HERE)

"Missionary Directions Today" Sermon
A Challenging Message from the Convocation

Below is a brief outline from a very challenging message delivered by David Smith, Director of Missions for Austin Baptist Association. Read the full notes from this presentation HERE.

As DOM’s, Disciplers Of Many - How do we cast a vision for our Associations to join in the task of Discipling an entire world?

1. By seeing the largeness of the harvest.

2. By praying …

a. For more workers

b. For a missionary mindset

c. For a capital ”K” Kingdom mindset

The churches of the ABA work together on 3 distinct fronts.

1. In the area of church strengthening.

2. In the area of church planting.

3. We as an Association have said that we want to be about City transformation.

3. By being in the harvest ourselves.
4. By trusting that the Lord will provide.

This “Harvest” business is not just a test of obedience, but also a test of dependence on the Lord: trusting that the Lord of the Harvest will provide.

Facilitated Breakout Sessions
Outline as Reported in Final Session of Convocation

A Director of Missions facilitated each breakout session with a note-taker provided by the North American Mission Board. The comments recorded from each of the 19 or 20 groups were then compiled into brief, digestible statements, and presented to the group attending the convocation on Friday morning.

Below are the questions and the summary of answers as presented to the group. Dr. David Meacham (NAMB’s Senior Consultant for Associational Strategies) stated that all responses would be made available at some point in the future in addition to these summaries.

FACILITATED BREAKOUT #1: PERSONAL PREPARATION AND POWER: MISSIONARY ROLE EXPECTATIONS OF THE ADOM (Reported by Dr. Russell Cook)

QUESTIONS:

1. As an ADoM, what things have you found helpful in your personal journey of living a vibrant spiritual life?
Summary of Answers: Spiritual Disciplines: Prayer / Bible / Quiet Time / Accountability

2. In your role as an ADoM, how can you be a good example of missional living and personal involvement in fulfilling the Great Commission?
Summary of Answers: Spiritual Overflow – Ministry Engagement

3. What spiritual breakthroughs do you see taking place in your association, especially as they relate to the Great Commission?

Summary of Answers: People group engagement, Church Planting, Prayer, and Community Partnerships

4. How do you balance the concept of “finding where God is at work” with the challenges of planning strategies, organizing structures, and managing resources?

Summary of Answers: Spiritual sensitivity, discovery before development, prioritize Kingdom, balance

5. While praying for a movement of God, what can you do to help churches focus on new spiritual energy and the spiritual dynamics needed to fulfill the Great Commission?

Summary of Answers: Mentoring / Accountability for pastors, being before doing, celebrate success

FACILITATED BREAKOUT #2: PRIORITY OF PURPOSE: ADoM AS A MISSION STRATEGIST (Reported by Eddie Miller)

QUESTIONS:

1. What qualities and characteristics, skills and competencies will be needed by ADoM’s in the future?
Summary of Answers: Communication Excellence: Tech/Interpersonal; Lifelong learner, Developer of Leaders, Cross-cultural skills, Mobilizer

2. As you scan the horizon, what will be your greatest Great Commission opportunities in the coming days? Be specific.

Summary of Answers: People / Affinity Groups, World across the street, Revitalizing Churches, Starting Churches

3. In the future, how should we measure success in associational work? What will be on the scorecard?

Summary of Answers: Community / Cultural Transformation (needs more discussion), Church Health

4. If you had everything you needed, resources, time, and money, what could you do that no one else is doing to positively impact the work of your association?

Summary of Answers: Start more churches, Invest in Pastors and families, Train more leaders.

FACILITATED BREAKOUT #3: PERSISTENCE OF PLAN: MISSIONARY CHALLENGES FACING THE ADoM (Reported by Wesley Pitts)

QUESTIONS:

1. What are the possibilities for the future of associations? What are the possible scenarios you see for the next 10 years?

Summary of Answers: Diversity of Associational Types, Potential Resource Shifts, Technology Shifts

2. What should be “the takeaways” from this National Convocation? What “watchwords”, key thoughts, or phrases should emerge from this time and place?

Summary of Answers: Associations = Full Partners, Not Your Mother’s Association, Missionary Risk-Taker, Rebuild Trust / Transparency, Spiritual Vitality Needed, Value of this Type of Meeting

3. What can we do to prepare for a “bright future” for the Greatest Impact for the Great Commission?

Summary of Answers: Pursue Spiritual Excellence, Networking at All Levels, Flexible Structures

FINAL SESSION SUMMARY (Presented by Sid Hopkins)

TAKEAWAY 1

We and our world have a spiritual problem that only God has the answer for in the Person of Jesus who can empower us through the Holy Spirit

SPIRITUAL IMPLICATIONS

We must be spiritually empowered to do spiritual work or else we are in way over our heads: Our Key Problem
J.C. Bradley said that the Holy Spirit is the “Cosmic Director”
We receive the power of the Holy Spirit when He chooses to release it and He releases it to whom he chooses
So our spiritual power is an act of grace on God’s part not anything that is “due” to us or merited by us
Scripture teaches “To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Required” The reverse of that scripture passage might be true: Much is required before much is given…We have to be His before He gives Himself to us

TAKEAWAY 2

God has a purpose for associations of churches cooperating and networking together for Kingdom results

PURPOSE IMPLICATIONS

We need to be careful when we say our purpose is to serve, resource, churches, etc.
Our purpose is to serve God based on our calling and it can be expressed in our ministry of serving, resourcing the church, etc.
We must continually remind ourselves that all of our training, skill development and competencies must be “anointed by God” in order to be useful to God
We can be visionary and competent without being having spiritual vision and spiritual competency…a difference

TAKEAWAY 3

Ephesians 4 tells us it is God who has chosen to give Apostles, Pastors, Evangelists, Prophets & Teachers to the church for the equipping of the saints and the building up of the body of Christ

FUTURE IMPLICATIONS

The diversity of these offices and roles given to the church means that associations will have a diversity of leadership styles
That diversity of leadership styles will produce a diversity of models that will work in different contexts

TAKEAWAY 4

Much thanks and appreciation are expressed by all DoMS, SBCADoM, NoBA and AIM for the partnership with NAMB in developing this convocation and to NAMB for hosting it.

FUTURE IMPLICATIONS

Much appreciation has been expressed for the calling and hosting of this convocation because of the value it has brought to our lives & ministries…we want and need more opportunities of this sort…let’s do it!
While talking about our partnership in ministry in the past, associations have not really been received as full partners
It is our prayer that we can have such partnerships in the future
Associations are ready to join hands with state conventions and national entities to strengthen our cooperative future as full partners in the harvest fields where associations live
Come and work with us there!

Convocation on Associational Missions and Ministry

A National Convocation on Associational Missions is a calling together of all associational missionaries to focus on the challenges and opportunities of helping their churches fulfill the Great Commission.

On September 9-11, 2009, at Ridgecrest , NC , Associational leaders will deal with four important questions:

How should associations and ADoM’s function in the future?
What mission priorities should be emphasized?
What networks, systems, and partnerships need to be in place?
What “best practices” are working today?

Dialogue groups and breakout sessions will deal with mission strategies plus the tools and resources needed for implementation. Topics will include:

Personal Preparation and Power: Missionary Role Expectations of ADoM’s
Priority of Purpose: The ADoM as a Mission Strategist
Persistence of Plan: Missionary Challenges Facing ADoM’s

Speakers for the plenary sessions will include ADoM’s JC Bradley from North Carolina and David Smith from Texas . Geoff Hammond, President of NAMB, will bring a Mission Challenge for the Future and former SBC President and Missionary Leader, Tom Eliff, will speak about the Spiritual Dynamics of Fulfilling the Great Commission. A special track for ADOM wives will also be available, led by Debbie Hammond and Sue Meacham.

National Convocations have played a significant role in the history of Baptist Associations. At past meetings, the role of associational leaders was clarified to be mission strategists. The role of the association was clarified to assist churches in mission work locally and to the ends of the earth. The last Convocation was held at Ridgecrest in 1989. The focus was on the development of mission strategies.

Report from SBCADoM
LOUISVILLE - The forty-ninth year of the Southern Baptist Conference of Associational Directors of Missions (SBCADoM) organization met on June 21-22, 2009 at the Valley View Conference Center in Louisville , Kentucky , . The theme for the conference was “Servant Leadership.” Speakers included Dr. Ken Hemphill, Dr. Wesley Pitts, Dr. Thom Rainer and Dr. O. S. Hawkins.

The annual banquet on Sunday recognized those who are retiring and those who have reached significant milestones in their ministry tenure. Kay Dekalb Smith entertained and inspired the group with humor, music, and personal testimony of her walk with God.

The Monday schedule presented a change in the usual programming. Attendees were given the choice of choosing two of five breakout groups. Ted Knapp led the new leaders with help from Larry Baker, Dennis Pulley and Richard Graham. Greg Frizzell led a discussion of “Servant Leaders Pray.” He gave special attention to his latest book on leading pastor search committees to pray. Hugh Townsend presented an overview of recommended DoM competencies. The association of the future was the subject of a session led by Mike Day. Dr. David Meacham led a question and answer meeting concerning the upcoming associational convocation and the partnership between associations and the North American Mission Board.

Approximately 250 DoMs, wives, and guests attended the meeting. Ron Davis was elected president, Jim Breedin was chosen as first vice president and Johnny Rumbough will serve as second vice president.

All associational leadership are invited to celebrate SBCADoM’s 50 years of existence at the 2010 meeting in Orlando.

SPIRITUAL DRIFT, by Larry Richmond

Do people drift in their relationship with the Lord? Absolutely! The Old Testament is filled with occurrences of the Israelites in a “sin cycle” involving fellowship with God, drifting from God, disobedience through sin, repentance, and returning to fellowship with God. Drifting is not confined to the Old Testament. I believe it has happened in America over the past 100-200 years. As best as I can determine, we are in the “negative” part of the sin cycle in America. Hello Fellow DOMs!

As the National Chairman for the Network of Baptist Associations (NoBA), I wanted to write to let you know what will be taking place at the Summit 2009 and encourage you to register to be a part of another great event done by DOMs for DOMs!

All participants will have the privilege of choosing five breakout sessions as well as being a part of three plenary sessions, plus networking with other DOMs throughout the Summit event. Many say that the networking with other guys is as valuable as anything else that they sometimes get in a conference. The conferences and networking make for a great experience.

This year, we are also partnering with the Associational Initiatives Team at NAMB to provide a Track for the Core Competencies that are being developed to help DOMs change the culture of associations. The Core Competency being taught this year is "Achieving Kingdom Results" and will be available to the first forty who register for the Summit and request that track. Those 40 people will be led by the team of DoMs trained by NAMB and will stay together all day on Tuesday except for breaks and lunch. The evening will be free for those participants to network back with others on Tuesday night and they will also be able to participate with everyone on Monday evening and choose two breakouts for Wednesday morning.

If you are interested in attending this year's SUMMIT Training Event, let me encourage you to go to www.nobasbc.org and you will see the information on how to register, how to make your housing arrangements and how to sign up for the breakouts.

Please read and follow the instructions closely and be sure to respond to the confirmation emails that will be sent to you in order to finalize your registration. Please watch for those emails and reply to them to complete your process. You are NOT registered until you receive the second confirmation email, which serves as your receipt for registration.

NoBA now has 380+ members and it is growing each week as more people find out about what we are doing. We know that finances are tight with everyone at this time and some who might normally come may not be able to do so. Remember, that if you renew your membership, then you can still access many of the sessions online after the Summit. In these times of change and challenge, our positions are experiencing unprecedented opportunities to make an impact in the lives of churches and the Kingdom. Talking to other Directors of Missions and associational staff members is usually the best place to find new best practices and ideas that are really working. Theoretical training has become so much a part of our culture that practical tips and training are somewhat unusual. Not so at the NoBA Summit meetings. People who are actually doing it will be there sharing their experience and their knowledge.

It is the vision of NoBA to be on the cutting edge of associational work through interactive training provided by real associational leaders who are getting it done in the field. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ASSOCIATIONAL INITIATIVES CONSULTANT NAMED

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – A couple of months ago, a cross section of Directors of Missions from across the country were invited to the North American Mission Board (NAMB) for an "Associational Think Tank" regarding the assignment given by the Southern Baptist Convention to NAMB for associations. The goal was to receive input so that as a new leader was selected, someone could be found that would have the gifts and the background to accomplish those things that DoM’s felt were important to service associations so that they could more effectively service their churches. There were hours and hours of discussion and input during the "Associational Think Tank."

One request of the group was that associational ministry be elevated to the level of being represented by a Senior Consultant, with the authority and influence similar to others representing significant ministries at NAMB. (More...)

TWO SPECIAL NOTICES:

RESEARCH TEAM -The Research Team of NoBA is now being formed. If you
enjoy researching data, solving denominational and congregational puzzles
and want to provide quality informative tools that have a factual basis
... this team might be for you. Inquisitive people are welcomed.

If this sounds like you and you'd like additional information, contact Dr.
Mike Stewart at domccba@gmail.com. If interested in being a part of this
team, send your current resume to the same address.

We are looking for a wide variety of backgrounds for the research team.
You will need to have 4 - 6 hours per week available to do research and to
dialogue with team members. Six team members will be selected by August 1,
2008. A researched presentation is expected to be ready by NoBA's 2009
Associational SUMMIT conference. May the Lord bless each of you.

SURGERY - Sid Hopkins has requested that I notify you that for the next
two to three weeks there will not be any contacts or work related to any
of our NoBA Communication tools (i.e. Website, mailing lists, newsletters,
etc., except for our Facebook group, which Mark Millman manages). This
is due to the fact that I am required to have surgery on Monday morning
(June 30, 2008) at 10:00. I apologize for the inconvenience that this may
cause, but it is unavoidable.

Updates related to my surgery will be posted on our "Personal Prayer
Journal" at www.findMIchurch.org/Prayer. Thanks for your prayers.

Announces Focus of 2009 Summit

SUMMIT ANNOUNCEMENT

The National Leadership Team of NoBA announced earlier this week that ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP will be the focus of training at the 2009 Associational Summit in Fort Worth, TX. This is one of the four Essential COMPETENCIES determined to be necessary for associational ministry. There will be multiple sessions that will be a part of the new CERTIFICATION process that is being developed by the NoBA Education Team.

Additional competency training will take place in 2009 including a March 2009 NoBA regional training event in Michigan.

Other topics will also be covered in breakout sessions during the 2009 SUMMIT. We anticipate opening our 2009 SUMMIT registration and having more complete information available by late August or early September.

Can you believe that summer is on us?

Summer work including VBS, camps and a host of other opportunities are right here. I hope your plans are in place or at least coming together. Remember you may be able to help a neighboring association by offering to include them in some of your training or programming.

Summer means that the convention is almost here as well. If you can, please plan to attend the convention and the SBCADOM conference in Indianapolis. Your participation in both as we watch, listen, support and encourage the denomination at the national level may become a very important part of what you do to maintain awareness and relevance to the Southern Baptist Convention. (CLICK HERE to read my article "What About the Future?")

Remember we will help you as much as we can to stay on mission in your association and around the world. Pray that God will continue to give us favor with the churches and favor with the communities where we are the mission presence. You are the missionary voice for your communities. Keep talking, praying, and working to make an impact for the Kingdom and the Gospel.

Thanks for all you do! May the peace, power, and presence of Christ be real to you and your association as you work for His Kingdom in your mission field.
